Gorgeous bag with impressive little details

I'm continually impressed with Vera Bradley bags, and this backpack is no exception. They've paid attention to the little details that make a backpack excellent or terrible -- in this case, excellent. The fabric on this bag, as always with Vera Bradley, is quality. The quilting is beautiful and really elevates the feel of the bag from just an average backpack to something worth the price tag. The whole bag has a padded feel, and I love that about it. The lining fabric in the black bag is a lovely black and white print -- a perfect compliment to the black exterior. But, onto the design... I love the large, flat pocket at the very front of this bag that zips up sideways. It'll be a fantastic place to stash small or flat-ish items that you need quick access to (in the past, this might be an airline ticket, but today, maybe a passport or other important things of that nature). It's got a little pouch in there, too, so if you want to stash a phone, it won't fall out when you unzip the pocket. The next compartment is more of a typical front backpack compartment. It's got a few different kinds of pockets in there for stashing different sized items and organizing. As a nice bonus, it's got a little hanging ring for you to clip your keys onto for easy access. I'm used to features like this in a purse, but in a backpack, it's unusual -- and wonderful! Kids aren't the only ones using backpacks anymore. The main compartment is very spacious, and even has straps (kinda reminds me of a suitcase) for you to secure something to the back area of the compartment. This would be great for stuffing a change of clothes into a separate bag and securing that out of the way with the straps. There's plenty of room in this compartment for just about anything! At the very rear of the bag is a separate, zippered, padded laptop compartment -- At first, I thought hey, those straps inside the main compartment could keep a laptop stored safely behind your other items, but it's not needed! Just secure that laptop or tablet into the back pocket of the bag and you have easy access. Huzzah! No more digging behind my other stuff to get to my tablet or laptop. On the exterior sides of the bag are two water bottle holders, one on each side - another "must" in my book for any backpack. I'm so glad to see they didn't leave them out. The shoulder straps are padded and shaped nicely -- they also include a chest strap if you're into that sort of thing (I usually don't use them, but it's nice that it's there). Also included on the bag is a strap to secure it to the handle of your other luggage. All in all, this is a fantastically designed bag that looks sharp and classy for a traveling adult. It will make for a wonderful carry-on bag. Hats off, Vera Bradley, this is definitely a worthwhile purchase.

Beautiful bag, with minor design flaw

This bag is a beautiful bag, love the black and white paisley print liner. This has a lot of pockets and straps for carry on inside main compartment. The zippers are solid and feel great. And the stitching on the outside is very nice look and feel. The fabric feels heavy and will hopefully hold up for years. I included measurements pictures to show sizes if you plan to carry on. My initial intent is not air travel. The design flaw that bothers me for the money you pay is the expansion zipper. First the zipper being exposed and not having a pocket to hide the zipper into to protect it is just sad. For the money that seems necessary to protect the zipper and prevent failure. A zipper that sits exposed on the bottom of the bag is just odd for the cost.... The other thing is the zipper hangs up on the bottom, new out of box, the bottom expansion zipper is already flawed and sticky. Stacking the stop position on top of that not well placed at all... That being said the simple solution is to keep the zipper off to the bottom corner opposite to prevent either. Not sure how that is going to hold, but will update if that causes further failure. Great bag, recommend!

Fashionable, yet feature packed. Good for everyday use in the office, on the road, or at school.

The media could not be loaded. This review is for the Vera Bradley Large Microfiber Backpack in black. This bag has a fashionable raised diamond pattern covering all outside surfaces, including the back and bottom! The diamond pattern is striking, even in black, since the microfiber fabric has a matte finish and the thread used for the diamond design is partially reflective. Overall, this very cleverly designed backpack exceeded my expectations since, despite the good looks, it has several well-integrated technical features. There are internal compression straps to keep the load closer to your back, expandable side pockets for water bottles or tripods, and a non-removable sternum strap! It's good for everyday use in the office, on the road, or at school. My only concerns about the bag pertain to its durability and that laptops could be better protected. The Vera Bradley large microfiber backpack is spacious (I'd estimate the capacity to be ~30L) but lightweight; consequently, it won't be as hard-wearing as high-denier nylon or polyester. Also, it doesn't have a frame or rigid structure, so I'd recommend keeping loads under 20 pounds. Lastly, there's only about a quarter inch of padding in the laptop compartment, and since the bottom of the compartment rests at floor level, you'll need to be gentle when you put your computer in or set the pack down to prevent your computer from thudding against the floor. All in all, it's a good looking and highly functional bag.

My New Travel Companion

Wow this is the biggest travel backpack I have ever owned, in both size and carrying capacity. The front has a zip up pocket with a little pouch inside and the first compartment has more pockets and a little strap you can attach keys to. It has 2 pockets that can expand on the sides. They can carry a small Pellegrino can to a larger mug. It might not work too well depending on what you have stored inside the backpack though. You can easily store an outfit or two neatly fold in the main compartment of the backpack. It has two tie down straps like a traditional suit case would to keep your stuff in place. You can also expand the backpack to give ya some more room with the zipper near the back. The laptop compartment is the last compartment closest to the back naturally. and WOW the padding of that compartment is nice and thick! Gives you a little piece of mind about the safety of your laptop. I'm not too sure about water resistance for the entire bag though. The backpack is a cotton fabric and The lining doesn't feel like your traditional water resistance fabric. But the interior lining of the laptop compartment is made with a different fabric from the rest that feels more water resistance.
