A smart purchase
I love tech but I've resisted Smart Watches. I work in an office surrounded by people with Smart Watches which need charging every say or so - when I wear a watch, I tend to leave it on - and I don't want to worry that checking the time too frequently will kill the battery! This Smart Watch is a 'hybrid' Smart Watch. Instead of a wrist-computer it is essentially an analogue watch, a really attractive understated analogue watch which allows your smartphone to do all the, well, 'smart' stuff! Basically, you wear this as a watch and use a smartphone app to set the time/alarm etc. But the app does much more than that, when the watch is synced to your phone via Bluetooth, information is shared between the two so you can monitor sleep hours, steps per day, etc. It doesn't have a heart rate monitor - so something like a FitBit might be a better purchase for something like that. But this is a great intermediary - if you want a stylish watch with smart functionality then this is a fantastic concept. The watch itself look beautiful. I don't like 'blingy' watches, some cost a bomb but look very tacky. This is stylish though - black and understated - it's even named after the font is uses, and back in the '90s Helvetica was my preferred font (I've sinced moved from Arial to Calibri, though they don't have their own watch!). There is no second hand on this, but there is a secondary dial to support a summary display in analogue form of what you can view in detail on your smartphone. The hands have white accenting to make them stand out, it might sound like a strange thing to say but it's really easy to tell the time on this watch. The display is uncluttered and the minimalist look is timeless (ironically) so this won't date. The bezel and strap are black too, this is striking without being in-your-face. In a nutshell: I never thought I'd see a Smart Watch with a 2 year battery life. I guess this isn't a regular Smart Watch though - those wanting text message alerts, etc ought to look elsewhere. But those wanting a stylish watch with some lifestyle tracking functionality will love this.

Simple. Unfussy. Gorgeous
I don't really like smartwatches. I don't like having a computer sitting on my wrist. I don't want to see my emails on my watch - my eyesight is bad enough to make even an iPhone screen a bit on the small side. I'm not that enamoured with the trend towards fitness apps either: I don't like being nagged. And although I quite like some fashion watches that have silly dials that don't serve any useful purpose but look cool, how much better to have a watch that looks cool and actually delivers on its promises? This Mondaine watch does that. It has a beautiful understated design, completely analogue, with high-contrast hands (but no "glow in the dark"), and a clear, simple layout. There are some slightly pointless words ("Helvetica Smart Swiss Made" - do I really need to know that?) but in every other way, form follows function, and it's just a beautiful thing to have on your wrist. There's no second-hand, but the minute hand ticks forward clearly and decisively as each minute passes. There's absolutely no doubt about which minute it is. The date marker ticks forwards once per day (it's labelled 6, 11, 16, 21, 26, 31 rather than 5, 10, 15..., but it's clear enough to read once you get used to it). There's also a little red hand that keeps track of progress against your daily steps goal (by default, 10,000 paces). There's nothing obvious to show that this is a smart watch inside. But it is. You can't even set the time manually: you need to install an app on your phone to do that. Be careful to install the correct app! Searching for "Mondaine" should get you the MotionX-365 app, which is the one you need. It pairs with the watch using Bluetooth. Some of the useful things you can do with the app include: - Aligning the hands correctly: you can "nudge" them to align directly to 12, so you don't get wonky readings. - Set an alternate timezone: once you have done this, if you press the crown on the watch three times, the hands briefly move to display the time in the other timezone (for example,I work with an offshore team based in India, so I have my alternate timezone set forwards 5.5 hours). - Setting (or better, unsetting) an annoying beep that the watch makes if it thinks you've been idle for too long. Not something you want going off then you're in the theatre. - Setting your exercise and sleep targets. I've stuck with the default 10,000 paces, although I rarely exceed 9,000. The sleep thing doesn't really work for me. I don't want to leave the watch on my wrist overnight, and although it allows an "under the pillow" option, I prefer to leave this lovely watch somewhere a bit safer overnight. And I'm not going to tell my watch when I'm having a "power nap" for goodness' sake. The only other thing that looks slightly wrong to me is the alignment of the "12": the first digit is aligned to the dot for midnight/noon, so the number is not centre-justified. I can see why this has been done: combined with the text below it, it gives a clean vertical down the centre of the display. It still doesn't look quite right to me. The strap is silicone, fastened with a metal clasp. It's quite easy to shorten it yourself: you need something thin to push out the pin, and then you can cut the appropriate number of segments off the silicone strap. If in doubt, any jeweller can help you with this. They can also change the battery: the instructions say this will be needed roughly every two years. This is possibly he most unfussy, unpretentious, but gorgeous watch I've had the pleasure to try. Certainly I'm interested to know how far I walk every day, but I don't want to look like a fitness freak. I like gadgets, but I don't want to look like a "naval aviator", with a huge lump of chrome strapped to my wrist. I want a watch that can tell the time and that looks good, and makes it look like I have a better sense of style than I probably have. And that's what this watch gives me.

A stunning timepiece, beautiful design that belies some very modern technology.
I haven't worn a watch for many years, working in a busy city there's always clock towers and PCs, plus we all have mobile phones. I jumped at the chance to review such a practical and elegant timepiece that that is the Mondaine. Immediately you pull the watch from it's exquisite box you know you have something truly special in your possession. Very solid with a good solid weight to it. The strap as supplied is very large even for someone like me with very large arms, so I immediately set to shorten the strap. An easy procedure, simply unhook the watch pin, use a very sharp knife to cut a link from the silicone strap then reconnect the linkage, 30 second procedure. Underlying the beautifully designed standard watchface is smartwatch that allows you to track your steps and sleep time activities. You will need a mobile device, either an iPhone or Android phone. I have an Samsung Android phone and the Motion-X application was easy to install, pairing and updating the watch's software was all automatic. The software requires you enter some basic details about yourself such as weight, height and age so it can advise and track your activity. The watch only has one button, a crown and you use that to activate the sleep monitor, simply hold in for 3 secs, it beeps and then when you wake you repeat to stop the monitor. This automatically switches the watch back into steps activity mode. When you wish to see how you've been progressing you start the app on the phone, check the phone is sync'd and then check the data. You can set goals in the app, such as the number of steps per day target, the sleep requirements and others. You can operate various options such as the stopwatch from the app too if you wish. The package it arrives in it very nice indeed, a solid box padded box that comes with a very simple set of instructions, the 2 year guarantee card and an explanation of the evolution of the brand and the considerations as the makers designed the watch to remind you that you have an incredible timepiece. Yes it's a very expensive watch with standard smartwatch features but the item is absolutely exquisite, the stunningly little minimal face design is a joy to look at, all components are matched to the exact shade of black, one of the true marks of a well engineered device. I especially liked the fact that the watch looks simple and plain, doesn't try to show off or draw attention to itself but the design belies the quality timepiece and modern features. After almost 15 years without a watch I'm proud to say this watch has finally brought me back to the joy of owning and wearing a stunning timepiece on my wrist.

Decent watch, combined with fitness tracking.
This is a decent smart watch. When you open up the box you need to sync up with the app on iOS / android, this sets up the time and updates the watch's firmware. You can then sync your activities daily. The watch itself has a pleasing font, with a nice broad face (roughly about 1.5 "), the minutes are marked in lego dots. The hands aren't luminous, but the bottom dial gives the date, Rather than being a chronograph. The activity tracking includes sleep, steps etc. The syncing is a bit flakey, and I'm not sure how long I'll keep using the activity tracker. So a different approach, basically a conventional watch combined with Fitbit style tracking, rather than a more Apple watch style. Nicely done.
