Perfect Lunch Companion
I've been looking for a small backpack that has a decent water bottle holder and can fit a lunchbox. I know this is a super tactical backpack and I love all of the features but I use mine strictly to take my lunchbox, hydro flask, and Gerber spring-loaded knife to work. I removed the stretchy string portions and put my unit patch on the velcro and I am good to go. Long gone are the days I am walking in and out with a lunch box, y hydro flask, and a coffee mug while trying to open and close doors.

Favorite EDC Bag
This is a great small bag for EDC use. It will carry the essentials (assuming your needs are light) and not much more. This fits my needs perfectly. Previously, I used a Proteus waist pack as my primary EDC bag. The Proteus is a great bag, but it was just a tad too small. Basically, it worked for my initial intended purpose (a diabetic medical bag), but it did not have enough room for anything more (like a sandwich.) I have larger bags, but I tend to pack according the available space. This made these bags to heavy for daily use. Plus, I use a cane and he extra weight was a bit too much. I began looking for a smaller bag (not too small) and came across the Noatak. I wanted something similar in function to the Proteus, but a little larger. By similar to the Proteus, I mean that the bag had to either be a waist pack or function in a similar manner. This requirement excluded the Remora, Lunada, and Malaga (which I also own), because when pulled to the front (like a waist pack) the pockets are accessed horizontally not vertically. The Sitka was an obvious choice, but it was too big. The measurements on the Noatak seemed like the best fit - and it turns out to have been the best choice for my needs. The pluses for this bag are the following. - It is big enough for most daily urban EDC needs. - It will accommodate an iPad in the padded rear pocket (intended for a small water bladder.) - It will hold a folded sheet of paper, but not a legal pad. - It will not encourage you to carry more than you need to. - The optional supporting (for most people) supporting strap works great. (I need it to help stabilize my walk.) - The dual handles make it easy to grab-n-go or carry like small tool bag (Proteus.) - The water bottle holder is especially useful, especially coming from a Proteus which lacked this feature. Would I recommend this bag: yes. Is it for everyone: no. Especially, if you need to carry legal sized documents. Am I glad I bought this product: yes. *** UPDATE - March 2013 I've lived with the Noatak for a few months now. It is one of best packs in my collection. It is also a little schizophrenic. I'll explain why a little latter. Pluses *** - The bag is small (compact) - It holds a considerable amount for its size, if packed correctly * My maximum layout included the following: * Main Compartment - a fully packed Maxpedition Fatty organizer - a fully packed Maxpedition EDC organizer - a fully packed Maxpedition Mini organizer - a plastic jar of Planters roasted peanuts - a plastic jar of Emeralds chocolate almonds - eight packs of Justin's chocolate-covered hazelnut spread - holding / travel knife/fork/spoon utility - papers (folded) - four Kashi granola bars * Front Large pocket - Spec Ops T.H.E Wallet Jf. - Victorinox Ranger - Keys - Small flashlight - Pack of tissue - Hand sanitizer - Pack of gum * Water Bottle Holder - 16 oz Nalgene bottle * Bungie Strap - 20 oz wide-mouth Thermos * Water Bladder Container - Kindle or Ipad 2 - It looks good (to my eyes) - It keeps me from overpacking. I really like this bag, but there are a few drawbacks. For one thing, it is schizophrenic. By that I mean, that it can be difficult to determine the best way to orient the bag in certain circumstances. I typically use the bag in a horizontal position in front of me. It works well that way. This is also the way I prefer to pack the bag as well. This can be done, but it is easier if the water bottle is removed. The water bottle is positioned at the bottom of the bag when it is used horizontally. A necessary evil, but it takes some getting use to. The horizontal grab handle is another schizophrenic feature. I understand that its purpose is merely to grab the bag in a pinch. However, it works so well that it could be used to carry the bag - except there is no place to put the shoulder strap. My final quip is that the main compartment narrows a bit at the top. Thjs seems to be a "feature" on a number of Maxpedition bags. Unfortunately, it has the effect of restricting where larger items can be placed. So, do I still like the bag: Absolutely!! It holds an amazing amount of stuff, especially small items. My somewhat negative comments are merely quibbles. I did not want a larger bag and anything smaller would not hold as much. It is a good to-the-office EDC bag for my needs. However, if you tend to carry larger items (or just more stuff), I would look a larger bag; or one with less internal organization. Hope this helps.

Sweet pack
I bought a Sitka not too long ago because I liked the many features, but the pack ended up being too large for my slender frame. You can make a mini Sitka outta this pack with this and the Janus Tac-tied to the sleeve above the outer pocket which is exactly what I did and it's the perfect EDC pack. I absolutely love it. And, as always, Amazon prices trump Max's own website. So here's an UPDATE after I've had my mini-Sitka Noatak. I carry this much more often than I carried my Sitka because of the more compact size. The size is much better fitted for me. The Janus extension I found to be a must for this pack and I used my Janus for a decent little FAK with daily need items like hand sanitizer, chap stick, gum etc. I got mine in khaki/foliage and I like it much better than the straight foliage green of my Sitka. I like that, with the Noatak, they sewed an extra piece of fabric to make a base for the water bottle pocket. On the Sitka, the bottom is just sewn flat against the side of the pack, making for an awkward fit for the bottle. I do think Max skimped a little on the hook and loop field in the CCW pocket and this is the only thing I don't like about the Noatak. On the Sitka, the whole CCW pocket has one side all in hook and loop. The Noatak has just a square of it sewn onto one side. The field is adequate for the CCW holster, but it leaves small parts of the holster unsecured. This doesn't cause the holster to be unsecure, but the holster was designed with a full hook and loop attachment and the field in the pack should support this. The security flap pocket on the outside is still big enough for my wallet and cell, but it's a tight fit. I think I'm gonna get the cell phone holder and MALICE clip it to the PALS webbing where the strap meets the base of the pack. This little section is awesome for small accessories like the aforementioned cell case, extra mag pouch, small dump pouch, or knife case. This area is VERY accessible no matter how the pack is oriented (resting on your abdomen or back). *Note on driving while wearing the pack...After some experimentation, I figured a way to drive comfortably with this pack on while using your seat belt and maintaining the ability to mount and dismount your vehicle quickly. Plus, all your pockets, including the CCW one are readily accessible on your lap. With the pack oriented on your lap, reach up between the pack and your abdomen with your right hand and draw your seat belt clip down between these areas and buckle. The seat belt will be secured properly and when you pop the belt and step out, it slides away without tangling on you or your pack. You can also do this with the Sitka, but I wouldn't do it with a larger pack. Hope this helps! Wily

Great bag but tiny.
Hard to review this fairly. It looks just like the picture, is very well made and has some great features. However, it is tiny. I can get an ipad in the pouch at the back but only just (my ipad has a thin leather case on to protect it) so much so that I put it in the main compartment where it fits perfectly. There is not room for much more then, a small book etc. If you carry very little this is really good, but for me perhaps just a little too small to be practical. I do not want a big bag but I do need one that holds a little more. If I was at Maxpedition I would have added just a couple of inches to the height of this to allow A4 size items - it would then be more practical all round. If I go anywhere with this bag with just a few items, I cannot add anything else whilst I am out - to me that limits the use of carrying a bag in the first place.

This is certainly a great bag. I've been using the Noatak sling for ...
This is certainly a great bag. I've been using the Noatak sling for about 7 months now as my every day carry bag. It's well engineered and it still looks like new. I found that the size is perfect to carry the essentials while providing enough space to carry a lunch to work with me. I have also brought this bag with me on a plane and I was able to tuck it easily under the seat in front of me, this is while being completed loaded and with a Nalgene 32 oz bottle in the water bottle holder. The only disadvantage I found with this product is the lack of internal organization, especially in the front pocket. What I did to work around this is to get a Maxpedition EDC pocket organizer which fits quite well in the front pocket, and also in the main compartment pocket. I recommend this over an hook and loop pouch since it's easier to remove and has better internal organization. The Maxpedition Hook & Loop Double Pocket Insert will fit in the front pocket, however, once barely filled, it become too tight to be usable. Pros: Very comfortable Looks quite good Easily slides in front to access your content Not too big Easy to clean Water resistant Tough Cons: - Lack of content organization

Good value. Well made. MOLLE is good but needs more stitching.
This is a great bag. The materials are fantastic and it is made well. I was looking for something with a low profile and had the versatility that MOLLE provides. I took the bag as my carry-on to Las Vegas with some heavy radio equipment for a conference then took it with me after to hike up Mt. Charleston. With a little convincing I was able to fit a Lenovo x230 in the main compartment. I made it work with this bag. No regrets purchasing this. I would consider purchasing another Maxpedition bag in the future but I would prefer to inspect it in person before hand to see fit. However, this bag is good value. A few things that could improve... 1) The materials are great but this bag could definitely use more stitching as far as the MOLLE is concerned. I attached a Condor dump pouch to the back and it wasn't on as secure as I would have liked. The right side MOLLE straps were okay but again, stitching through the middle would have let me feel better. I attached an HSGI taco to the back strap to hold an antenna. That stayed on secure but a middle stitch would have felt better. 2) The material on the edge of the water holder is a bit rigid. It would be nice to close that a little tighter. 3) The angle of the strap is pretty wide. I have no doubt this was cut for a much larger person as most tactical gear is. I found it riding on the edge of my shoulder a bit even with the main strap tightened. Tightening the second strap helps this but it pulls on the buckle and lifts the main strap so it's not flush against your chest.

Maxpdition, I am now a fan.
Arrived promptly and well packaged. This is a great bag. We travel a lot and go on many days out when at home. This bag is not too big and not too small. lots of pockets and all zips up securely. Have to be careful not to pack too much into it. I watched lots of reviews on You Tube and learned what all the toggles etc are for. I love the way I can carry it in front so I can access travel docs, train tickets, purse and other stuff in the bag. When walking around I make sure all the zips have been locked/secured and swing it around to my back. Easy Peasy. Room to thread my jacket thru the strap at the bottom or the Y Strap, fits my hat thru the webbing and my scarf leaving my hand free. This is a very versatile bag. Only thing is, being a woman, it is a bit bulky on my chest due to body shape, lol.

perfect travel bag for carryon and day excursions
Love all my Maxpedition packs. Have 5 and now i give them as gifts. Well thought out, durable and functional. I look for Maxpedition first when ever I need a bag or pack. This pack is a single shoulder sling and is great for holiday traveling. Fits my iPad, charger, rain shell, first aid kit, pens and flashlight, and various other paraphernalia. and amazingly each compartment is the right size for what you need to store in it. Because Maxpedition seems to last forever, its and excellent buy!
