Didn't warm the water enough
This would probably work fine as a de-icer, but in Houston, my pond never freezes over. I bought this to submerge into a cranny in my pond to give my pleco a place to hang out during a cold snap so they would survive. It didn't work. The water around the heater didn't heat up enough to give them a warm space, and I lost all of them and one was almost a foot long. I'm still looking for a heater for this purpose and have yet to find one.

It's a trooper
This underwater guy has been a trooper so far. I put it in when the air temp started hitting 40. I think it kicks in at right about 34 degrees. It keeps a small hole through the ice, about 1.5 inches in diameter when placed about 8-10 inches deep. They say it's safe for pond liners but I don't want to take any chances so I put it on a flat rock. I have goldfish and mosquito fish in my 200 gallon garden pond, the mosquito fish love to hang out just above this heater. I use a floating heater on the other side of my pond, I have already had to replace that once because it sank. The floating heater makes a much bigger hole that my goldfish enjoy, but it's less reliable than this heater.

Very easy to install and effective.
It very easy to install and the long cord is very convenient. It also has nice look to it compared towboat I was using previously.

No Freezing fish hot tub.
The media could not be loaded. Although this maybe made for a pond I use it in a fountain with two fish in it and it works well.

Didn’t keep ice from forming
We had our first deep freeze and pond froze over with 2” plus ice. Didn’t come close to performing as expected. I had it located about 6” deep next to filter but surface froze but waterfall still flowed. I was under the assumption that surface wouldn’t freeze solid

Not as shown and very disappointing
Although this is a submersible pond de-icer, it is also shown as a floating pond de-icer, which is what I wanted. When it arrived, there was no white attachment, as shown in the pictures, to convert this into a floating de-icer. I called the company and was told that attachment is no longer used and it won't float. I was told that if the water was more than 18 inches deep, this de-icer would not make a hole in the surface ice. I was told to put it on a rock and get it closer to the surface. I think I can make it work by putting it on a rock ledge, which will move it closer to the surface and hopefully that will work. I am very disappointed that the company misrepresented this product on Amazon. This isn't what I wanted but it's already in the water so there is no returning it. I just want it to get us through this winter. 1/16/17.....Well, I decided to return it anyway. Amazon was great in helping me to do that. Got my money back and got another floating pond de-icer. Now I'm happy! Thank you Amazon!!

May be "thermostatically" controlled, but you can't set the temperature
I bought this for a goldfish pond, and assumed that "thermostatically controlled" meant I could set the temperature. Not so. There is no adjustment. It has a sensor that turns the heating element on at 32 F and then turns it off when the temperature rises above 45 F. It may work to melt ice or keep a pond ice free, but it will not "control" the temperature of your pond.

Awesome Product!
I was having difficulty keeping my pond temperature at the right level during all the cold weather we were having. I lost several fish and some "sucker" fish that I'd had for awhile in my pond. This pond deicer was highly recommended by The Pond Guy. So I bought it, and I am so happy I did. The pond now remains at the right temperature for my fish. I am so relieved. I'd been so worried and frustrated that I couldn't keep the temperature at the right level. The fish are swimming around as they should be and all is well!!

Working great so far. Advertising is a bit off though.
I'm using this heater for my 120 gallon pond. Seems to be working great so far. I'm hoping it will keep the frog population alive over the winter as the pond normally freezes solid. I tried relocating them to the only pond in my area deep enough but they returned within 10 days. It's amazing how far they will travel to return "home" It's advertised as being compatible with an air/water supply. I thought that meant there was a provision to hook an airline to it to provide aeration as well. What's actually provided does nothing to assist that whatsoever. It's misleading and shouldn't be included in the advertising. I'll know more about the heater once the deep freeze comes and will update the review accordingly

So far so Good
I've had the pond de-icer in the pond through the first month of a Canadian winter (temperatures have been down to -20 C) and it's worked perfectly. There is no ice on top at all, though my pond is quite small and we built a cover for it for winter. My only complaint is the cord is a bit short and they recommend for safety reasons that you not use an extension cord, making it difficult to reach an outdoor pond

So far so good
I always had a floating heater but it’s February in Alberta and pumps are still running fine with the submerged one. I did however create a snow igloo over the pond which probably helped. I will check if the fish survived the winter and post another review in spring.

I know my fish are okay
I have a 300 gallon pond in lower bc canada, the pond was completely frozen over so I first tried to melt by making a hole in the ice and put the deicer in but it just froze over again. Once I melted all the 4inches of ice with warm water hose. I now have the deicer in the water abd although still cold weather, it is no longer freezing over. I think I might look into the floating one next year as the pond only needs that hole for oxygen for the fish ,,

A really puzzling item.
Defies physical laws. Consumes electricity, yet makes no heat. Ice seems to form closest to the heater first. If you take it out of the water though, it will heat up like a damaged Japanese nuclear power plant.
