Thinner/lighter than orange "homer" bucket

First time I saw these on Amazon. Bought two 3-packs. I have purchased more than a few 5 gal buckets and lids for long term storage, in many varieties. My comparison of this bucket with a standard orange Home Depot "homer” bucket (manufactured in the US by Leaktite) is below: 1. I received 3 of 3 ordered, 5 gal. United Solutions buckets (green). No lids included. 2. This bucket is 1.53 lbs and the sidewall flexes a bit more than a "homer" bucket which weighs 1.75 lbs. No wall thickness “mils” listed for this bucket. “homer” is .070 mils, white food grade bucket is usually .090 mils. 3. Can stack these slightly tapered wall buckets in a "homer" but a "homer won't fully fit in these. $7.66/bucket for this 3-pack, $10/bucket for "homer" 6-pack recently bought on Amazon. 4. Could not get aftermarket "gamma seal" type screw-on lid rings to seat on this bucket using a 4 lb mallet (they seal every time on “homers”), but managed to get standard hammer-on/pry-off lids to seat properly. Leaktite snap-on lids also fit this bucket with no tools required, but had a tiny bit more play in them than a snap-on lid on a “homer”. I would not use a snap-on lid with this bucket for liquid/heavy material handling. 5. No food grade markings, I do not consider them suitable for direct bulk food storage (rice, beans, dog food, etc.) or for potable water. I expect them to be fine for long term storage of vacuum or hermetically sealed foods, meds, sanitary supplies, etc. Less new-bucket chemical stink than some "homers" I've bought. Good value for hauling dirt, sand, mulch, tools, etc. 6. I like that they are US made of recycled materials. The finish is a bit “slicker” than a “homer”. They un-nest easily but I have yet to evaluate their ease of cleanup with paint. Also, no mention of UV protection. I expect them to fade and become brittle when left in the sun for several years like “homer” buckets. 7. The bottom of the buckets I received are stamped “UNITED SOLUTIONS”, “U.S. 5 GAL.”, “MADE IN USA” and have a manufactured date stamp of “8-21”. That’s my “bucket list”. Hint: always drop silica desiccant bags in any sealed bucket (non-liquids only) to absorb moisture in the event of an improper seal. Add oxygen absorber packs if stored items are prone to long term oxidation. Cheap insurance, no matter what type of bucket or lid you use.

Perfect color green

Not so impressed

The color is more of a flat dark military olive green and is advertised as Usa Flag for what ever that means. It has a sturdy handle and connected well. The walls seem thin and are easily compressed. They are not as strongly built as the orange ones in the box stores. Of the three I received two of them where dented and left a crease that is there forever. If i didn't want the darker color I would return these and get the box store buckes for half the price. Bottom line is they work but cheaply made.

Food safe or Not!?

There's no 'Resin Identification Code' (Triangle recycling number), which identifies the type of plastic material this bucket is made of. However, they claim it is safe for food storage! The lack of markings on the bucket is unacceptable IMO and the fact that they haven't seemed to have confirmed that it IS food safe in the comments is concerning! Quoted from a food safety article: "Plastic is widely used in the world for storing food but has recently been found to contain harmful chemicals such as BPAs. BPAs are unsafe for human consumption and lead to health problems. This raises the important question of which plastics are safe." "Plastic containers come with a food-grade rating on the bottom that ranges from 1 to 7. This gives consumers an idea of how safe they are for storing their food. Plastic grades 2, 4, and 5 are the safest for food storage. Using these plastics to store food will prevent accidental toxin ingestion. Food-grade plastic has to meet regulations. It can’t contain dyes, additives, or any harmful products. Food-safe plastic can contain recycled materials, but these must fit appropriate guidelines. The Food and Drug Administration is responsible for determining how materials may act when in contact with food."
