Level above Scotts
I have used this spreader a few times since ordering it. First, building the spreader is easy enough. There were times that I had to study the picture and use some deductive reasoning, but for the most part it was easy to assemble. Prior to assembly, I wanted to make sure the gears were well greased and to my surprise, they had plenty of white lithium grease all over the apparent metal gears. Good to know. I sealed up the plastic gear cover and assembled the spreader. The only issue I wished would be different would be the auger would be lower in the hopper. Mine sits about an inch above the hopper and doesn't move material under it. I may try to adjust it if I can figure out how. After assembly, I used some Urea to gauge the amount of material at what settings. I used the suggested setting of 12 for 1/2 pound of N per 1000 sq ft. Setting 12 put out 14 pounds of Urea for roughly 15,000 sqft lawn. Looks like the settings are about perfect. I also used it to put down 58lbs of pre-emergent. I split the preM into two separate applications. I used the 12 setting on this also, and it worked well. The hopper may say 100lbs, but 40-50lb bags fit nicely into the hopper, I wouldn't go 100lbs. The bad: The two piece grate is worthless. I've tried it on the occasions and it isn't worth using so far. The rain cover though work great, though. Since I was putting down in slight drizzle, it helped keep the fertilizer from getting wet. Overall, this is a great spreader for those that need to jump up in size over the Scotts brand. Believe me, pushing that Scotts with a 40lb bag was a workout. The Chapin moves effortlessly with the pneumatic tires. Way easier and it will last for years.

Best spreader I've owned...
Not being a contractor or professional, and mostly being cheap and spreading seed and fertilizer by hand from a bucket all my life, this is the first real splurge I've had in the form of a pricey spreader and I am pretty pleased. It spreads well, and in a REALLY WIDE area, so I only had to do a single line pass to cover my entire yard. Things that could be better: 1. The feed levels could be better explained to match Scotts and other common spreader settings. Event he official website's answer is to just go waste seed and fertilizer on some concrete in your driveway to figure out the right settings. That's pretty stupid. 2. It would be nice if the blade (whatever you call the spinny thing) came without the spacer built into it that makes it sit an inch above the holes. I'd rather have spacers included separately so you can adjust the height. I routinely have stray product sitting around the holes when I'm done. Other than those two minor things, this thing is a champ. I was worried at first that it would be cheap plastic but it is very sturdy.

Heavy duty
The device is rugged, and as long as the metal doesn’t corrode too quickly, should last many years. It’ll easily hold 50 lb of fertilizer, but takes some real effort to push. It throws the fertilizer fairly evenly and it seems to avoid hitting the wheels and dropping in a line like my prior cheaper spreader. I got good results and consistently green lawn without spreading in two passes (one 90 degrees to the other) like I had to with cheaper spreaders. The gates at the bottom that are supposed to limit the pattern to the left or right are only partially effective. I’d recommend it if you’ve got a large lawn.

Please read
Assembly wasn’t too bad. I’m not done yet but there is one thing wrong I noticed in instructions. When attaching impeller to gearbox you don’t use a screw. You used a hair pin cotter… not the straight cotter for wheel. Got hung up on this for awhile. Also take your time w axle instructions. Like someone else posted….. if you get the axle wrong you’ll have to restart. Just use common sense in wheel direction and impeller direction. Seems like a good product so far.

Packaging not impressive
The box arrived in good condition but not impressed with the packaging! All parts were just dumped into the box loosely. I will be amazed if nothing is missing. Construction is of average quality and so it's a little disappointing. I've used Chapin sprayers for years and their quality is great so I expected more for the price. But to be fair, it's not completely together yet and not been tried. I will add to this review once it's together and tested. Ok, complete. Quality is actually better assembled than it appeared on the box. Works great and the extra cost compared to a low budget spreader is worth it. One caution, assembly is critical and the instructions are not great. Be sure the axle assembly is correct or you'll have to start over.

NOT an Excellent piece of equipment ????
My initial review of the Chapin 8303C broadcast spreader is below... I'm amending this review after just one year of use at this point. The gears would seem to grind some from the start, and I thought that using what sounds like plastic for gears on a piece of equipment supposedly designed for commercial use was a mistake. Well now the impeller barely turns and I'm sure the gears are worn almost completely. Fall is a major time for me (a small business gardener and landscaper) and to get to a job and not be able to use a tool for the job of the day really affects my livelihood and reputation with my customers. I'm terribly disappointed in this product, and have contacted Chapin to see what they can do for me and hopefully will be able to update this review favorably. I'm a professional gardener and landscaper and after using the spreaders that you find in the box stores or hardware stores just doesn't cut it. The original review follows ((The Chapin spreader is extremely well made, was easy to assemble but the best is how well it does the job! I have so much better control as to where and how much material I put down on the lawn. It makes me a better gardener and saves my clients money!))

Very good spreader!
I disliked the assembly of the product. By looking at it, one wouldn't think that it would take close to 3 hours to put together. I just wish that the grate was in one piece instead of two. There is no good reason why it's in two pieces. If, when put together it fits in the hopper, why not just make it one piece and ship it inside the hopper? I must be missing something here. Great spreader though, no regrets.
