RELAY DOES NOT REPLACE 109748X ON CRAFTSMAN!!A

My Craftsman riding mower, model# 917.271041, calls for a relay with part# 109748X. This Stens relay is supposed to be a direct replacement, however, after installing I proceded to blow the 30 amp fuse twice. The second time was my fault for not properly troubleshooting, only verifying the same thing happened again. The reason this happened is because there is diode wired in parallel with the coil inside the relay, which the original part does not have. Diodes allow current flow in only 1 direction, however these relays have it wired in the OPPOSITE orientation than what the wiring harness on the craftsman mower provides (pin 85 on the old relay is the + lead, whereas pin 86 on the new relay is designed to be the + lead). Basically what happens when you turn the key, is a high voltage flows backwards through the diode which damages the diode and shorts it out with zero resistance to ground. This essentially shorts your battery and blows the fuse. I remedied this problem by disassembling the relay and cutting out the diode as shown in the image. Now current cannont flow through the shorted diode and must flow through the coil as it should. Be sure the ends you cut off do not touch anything else inside the relay assembly. Saved me a lot of headaches

I was having a problem with my Craftsman lawn tractor with the lights and charging system. I replaced all three of the relays, not knowing which, if any, were faulty, and everything is working great.

For Use on a Gravely 16G

This was used to replace the safety/ignition relay on a Gravely 16G garden tractor. The tractor was shutting off intermittently when running on a hot day, which was a sign of poor or low electrical connection. I popped this baby in and the issue disappeared - I've ran it on hot days for a total of 5-6 hours since as well. Of note, the relay I received had a detachable metal bracket instead of the solid plactic one as pictured, but it works so I really shouldn't nit pick. Also, it seems to be of a poorer quality construction than the original, but again, it works and is inexpensive. UPDATE: One year later, I'm buying a new relay because it failed on me. The factory Bosch relay lasted 20+ years and this lasted one. As such, my rating went from 5 to 3 stars.

Not compatible with 109748X

Craftsman LT1000 16 Horse Kohler - Replaced the stator brake relay and operator presence relay and popped the fuse immediately. Put in the old ones and the short went away. Not going to give 1 star because the product itself may be fine, but the compatibility listings need to change.
