These work well
I had rented one of these to clean up a failed sump pump situation. They move lots of water. I tested this one in the tub. It works. My plan is to use it on the floor above the sump well as a failsafe should the primary fail. I have not installed it yet because I'll need about 25' of pipe to configure the installation.

Longevity is the question
The pump is fine and performs as advertised however it's longevity leaves much to be desired. I can't get my Rule pumps to last much longer than 3 to 4 years and they aren't cheap!!!

Good pump but now you have to pay extra for features that were included standard with earlier models
I have had a few of these over the past 10 years or so, used to remove water from a pool cover. When the one I purchased approx. 5 years ago gave out, I bought a new one. The one I purchased has a very short cord and did not come with the base that allows you to set it up correctly on a pool cover (luckily I had a few spares from prior pumps that went out). Noticed that Rule now offers this model with a 24 foot cord for $30 extra, and you can buy the base for $28. These factors make this an expensive pump to use for a pool cover, given that it won't last more than a few seasons at most (and that is keeping it unplugged most of the time so the sensor isn't cycling every minute checking for water). Also noticed that the pump does not specifically state that is can/should be used for pool covers. As far as function, this pump is very good/strong clearing water off a pool cover, and having the sensing feature is a game-changer. You can leave it plugged in all the time if you dare, or do like I do and check the weather, and if any chance of precipitation then I plug it in. Once the rain hits it will clear it off your cover quickly, then shutoff leaving just a small amount of water remaining under the pump. You will definitely need the base, and can get away with the short cord by using another extension cord. ****Update 01/17/2020**** - Pump stopped working today, got 2 1/2 seasons (Oct - Apr each year) out of it and was diligent to keep it unplugged when not raining.

Excellent customer service for a defective pump
Pump is expensive, but seems to work well. I bought one years ago that lasted several seasons and decided this year that it would no longer work. I use it as a AB pool cover pump. The original replacement I purchased last week failed out-of-the-box. It refused to turn on at all. It actually tripped the GFCI outlet at the pool. I tried plugging it into a second outlet in the shed and it also popped that GFCI outlet as well. Decided to try one last outlet at the deck and it tripped that one, too. 3 strikes and you're out. Contacted the seller on Saturday and requested a replacement. Received notification that a replacement was being sent on Sunday and would arrive on Monday. Amazon made it easy to send the defective one back by giving the option to have UPS pick it up and supply the driver with the return label. Bravo, Amazon! The replacement arrived earlier in the day and passed a quick test using an outlet in the house. It is currently sitting on top of the pool cover and doing its job of removing the rain water we got over the weekend. Thanks for making the return easy and also for getting the replacement out in a very timely manner!

Good compact pump
Was the only AC powered pump that would fit, the cycling on every couple of minutes was rather annoying, also I'm sure is why so many reviews say it craps out after a couple of years. I installed an in-line float switch that worked marvelously. The pump keeps up during thunderstorms to pump out our little patio area quite nicely!

The good: automatic operation
I've been using this (and earlier versions of this) as a pool cover pump for about a dozen years. I also use it to drain our hot tub once or twice a year. The good: automatic operation, good capacity, simple to deploy and use. Really is fully submersible. The bad: I seldom get more than 3 years out of a pump, and often only 2 before it fails, usually by blowing the GFI repeatedly. There is little warning of failure, so I end up with standing water on the pool cover with no working pump until I get a new one. The new version does not come with the base the old one did (Rule Replacement Strainer Base f/Pool Cover Pump ), but luckily, the old base fits and I have 5 of them now from older, failed pumps. The new base that ships with the pump will actually be better for the hot tub. Rule apparently no longer calls these pool cover pumps as of June 2014, although they still work great for that. Perhaps it is because the pumps don't weather well and they got a lot of warranty claims? If the pump had a better average life and Rule still supported them as pool cover pumps, I'd rate it higher.

An Answer to Our Prayers!
Happy with this product so far. Have had problems for years in our backyard when heavy rains fall. Sometimes it has lead to water seeping into our home. This pump seems to be just what we needed, being that it's automatic and moves quite a bit of water in a short time. During some recent heavy rains the pump has worked like a charm! Only reason I'm not giving it five stars is that we've had it only a few months. Not sure how it will hold up but we are quite satisfied with it's performance to date. UPDATE. Changing my rating from 4 to 5 stars. This pumped has worked flawlessly through two summers and has provided us much greater peace of mind when heavy rains fall. Has been well worth the price!
