My new favorite carrier

I'm glad I bought this. It's perfect and very sturdy and secure for small animals. I use it for my Maine coon cat and it's the perfect size for him. I love that you can open it from the top and side. We were at the vets and the tech came and opened the top to pet him and he was in Kitty heaven. The sides are screwed together rather than clipped so it doesn't come apart easy which makes me feel good carrying him around in it. All the air vents are nice too knowing he's not suffocating too and can see around. So this is absolutely perfect. Wish it came in cool bright colors though!! I want my guy to stand out and be the brightest boy he is lol

Overall value/cost to what I got…worth it.

For the little times I must put cats in them… they are perfect. The size for a 20 pound cat (yes I said 20, oy vey)…. There’s room for moving around, comfy pillow to lay on and still stand up and meow and drive me bat crazy… but yes this carrier fits exactly what we need. I’d put 5 stars but i due feel it’s sturdy for the price…

Seems like a good cat carrier.

Just right for my big cat (13.4 lbs.). Top opening may not be acceptable for airline travel, but my cat and I are not planning to fly anywhere. Perfect for vet visits.

Good transportation carrier with simple assembly procedures.

We purchased this carrier because we have one cat that is difficult to get into a front-loading carrier and we're hoping the top-loading one will be easier for getting him in and out (haven't tried it yet). We intend to use it strictly for transportation, and not as a closed housing kennel. The color and style are exactly as pictured in the Amazon photo. The empty, inside dimensions are about 20" long x 12" wide x 13-1/2 " high. It's hard to get an exact measurement because the inside corners and edges of the carrier are curved. The sides are therefore a little wider than the actual flat bottom measurement. Both of our cats are in the 12-13 pound range and should have plenty of room in the carrier for general travel, such as a trip to the veterinarian or groomer. We would also feel comfortable using it for our 10-pound Morkie or our 15-pound Cairn Terrier for transportation purposes. We would not use the carrier as a regular, enclosed housing kennel for any of our animals because it is too small to allow them to move around comfortably, especially with bedding inside like a crate pad or blankets that would take up interior room. It would, however, be suitable for them as an open sleeping crate, with the door removed. If you need a carrier for housing a pet of more than about 8 pounds for longer periods, you might want to get something a little larger. There's enough room to curl up and sleep and to shift position, but it probably would not be comfortable for standing up or to be used as a longer-term kennel. Pros: - The carrier itself is reasonably sturdy, similar to other carriers we have for our pets. - It's not too heavy, about 2-3 pounds. - Because of the grated, top-loading door, there should be good air circulation from all four sides and the top of the carrier. - The written assembly procedure itself is easy to follow and pretty intuitive. - The top door comes pre-inserted so you don't have to assemble it. - The front door was easy to insert and the spring loaded opening mechanism on the top and side doors are easy to use - the spring holds tight, but is not difficult to pinch and hold open like some other carriers we've had. - To attach the two halves, you use supplied metal screws and plastic wingnuts inserted in holes placed around the edges of each half, which is a simple procedure to follow. Cons: Putting together the top and bottom halves of the carrier with the supplied hardware, while not complicated, was slightly difficult for two reasons 1) There was one manufacturing / quality control issue - A few of the assembly holes punched in the carrier were uneven, too small or not punched out completely, so I had to widen them slightly or the screws would not fit through them properly. This was simple to do with a screwdriver. 2) The plastic wing nuts fit snugly on the screws (which is good), but it makes them a bit difficult to twist onto the screws. This shouldn't be a problem if you have good hand strength, but could be challenging if you have arthritis (I have a little arthritis in my hands), carpal tunnel or just weak hand strength. You might have to use a pliers to fully tighten the wing nuts, or get someone with stronger hands to screw them on completely. 3) The top door is not removable at all and the side door is not removable unless you disassemble the crate. For comparison, our favorite overall pet crate is thePETMATE 290272 19 by 12.7 by 11.5-Inch Navigator for Pets, Tan/Brown that has a door with rotating, compass-style latches on both sides of the door so that the door can be completely removed without taking the crate apart. It's also very simple to assemble and disassemble. However, it doesn't have the top-loading feature. We have the Petmate Navigator crate in 3 different sizes, and the largest one we used to actually kennel our dogs for several hours at a time when they were puppies, when we we weren't home and at night, until they became fully house trained. We like this carrier better than some others we've owned and would recommend it for transporting small pets up to about 10-15 pounds, especially if you prefer to have a top-loading feature.

Handle fell off

I enjoyed this carrier for several years but after my last trip to the vet I put it in a spot where it rolled over from the couch to the floor and the handle fell off. I didn't recognize that it was the handle several days later, as I was doing construction in the area, and believe I threw the handle away. I could not get product support as it was several years ago that I purchased so I am ordering another brand with a more integrated handle this time.

Great deal!

This was literally HALF the price of the same exact item at Mini PetMart. We appreciate the 2-door entry options for sure. We are FT RVers and have added a kitten to our travel-mates... this works quite well for our travel days as well as a "time-out" arrangement when Mr. Bojangles gets too wild-child on us! He settles right in for a nap and seems to enjoy his little cave.

Sturdy & the latches on the doors are so easy to operate!

A great cat/dog carrier. Big enough for most pets, and very sturdy. The handle is so positioned that when you pick up the carrier it's level (unless, of course, your pet decides not to remain in the middle!). The latches on the front & top doors are excellent -easy to open or close with one hand, and are very securely held by spring-loaded rods. One note: although it's simple to put together, the bolts need a bit of energy to push them through the very tight holes. However, any bolts which haven't been pushed through completely, will be pulled through when the wing-nuts are tightened. At 10 minutes, it was the longest part of the assembling. Shame that the holes on the side aren't all the same size as the largest so that Kitty could see more. The more visibility -the better!

Nice, roomy carrier with very secure door and top load hatch

This is an American built carrier, at the time of writing, the number one best selling pet carrier on the Amazon USA site. Since it doesn't seem that wildly available in the UK I was delighted that Amazon UK stocked it. Do take a look at the couple of thousand Amazon USA reviews before making up your mind up about this carrier. My history: The door hinge broke on my old 22" cat carrier and for reasons of storage space I tried to downsize to the Amazon Basics 19" carrier, in theory only 3" smaller, but which proved to be far too small for an adult cat. So back in the market for something larger, I hunted around till I found this one. It's a roomy transporter, but not heavy in my opinion, so large you could probably fit two friendly cats together in this! I've come to the conclusion that cat carriers are either too small for comfort or unnecessarily large for the average moggie... Overall this Petmate carrier has a good quality feel to it, the plastic seems rugged enough and I like that the top and bottom fit together with 9 screws + bolts (I was provided with plenty of spares). You can certainly take the top and bottom apart for storage, but it would be a faff in my opinion, but the option is there. The front door and in particular the upper hatch feel well constructed, and I see it as a positive that the locking mechanism for each require two fingers to open as you are required to squeeze a pair of dual sprung handles together to unlock. For this reason there is little chance of either opening accidentally, say if the carrier was accidentally dropped. In summary: a roomy, well built carrier with secure locks. Recommended.

Brilliant piece of kit.

The carrier is well built and easy to assemble. It comes with spare screws and bolts which is a great idea. The doors lock securely. I used it to carry a seriously hurt cat to the vet. Having a door at the top is very useful because I was able to observe how the cat was. The carrier is quite spacious for an average sized adult cat. When dismantled it is easy to store.

Good sturdy cat carrier

Found this easy to assemble (took a little time). Currently use it for transporting two kittens. Haven't had a problem using it or making sure the clips are securely in place. As one reviewer said,on the inside face of the sides, where the ovals are, isn't particularly smooth, but this hasn't been an issue for us. Will need to edit this review once they're fully grown and I'm using it for a single adult cat at one time.

Top quality!

Very easy to assemble (I have arthritis and fingers don't work well). Assembly instructions simple and easy to follow. Robust and well finished, definitely a quality item and at a very fair price. Purchased specifically to transport my new pedigree puppy from Scotland to his new home in comfort, safety and security. I have used similar items in the past and this is highly recommended.
