We got these for my 3yo last year for Christmas. I wasn't sure how successful of a gift it may be, but it was a HIT. At 4 she is still loving making all of her friends and family necklaces with their names on them and patterns around them. I would write a person's name on paper and let her find the letters and put them in order. It was also great practice for her fine motor skills to put the beads on the string. I love how the strings are like shoelaces with little bits of plastic on the ends; it cut down on the frustration of trying to get the bead on the string. Definitely 5 stars. I would buy this again - and I might, this year, for Christmas.

storage is a mess but great otherwise...

I bought this item a week ago for my daughter. She found it very entertaining and has already made a few necklaces which she keeps wearing all day. Basically it means the set does the job. It is pretty self explanatory since the item photo shows all the ingredients as well as the divided storage board. The items are pretty small and they have a hole inside where you lead the strings. Stings are pretty long but they feel rather flimsy and thin compared to the beads. They look like shoelaces. All you need to do is put the beads in whatever combination and number you wish on the string and that is it. You can generate endless combinations and that is what the kids like best. Why I docked one star is the difficulty to store the stuff. I totally agree with other reviewers about the fact that it is nothing like a secure storage box without a front cover. That makes it very difficult to store or use. My suggestion is to put all the beads in a bag or a few bags and forget about this half made storage board. Other than the storage problem that is an entertaining toy that can be a good gift for a little girl that is old enough not to swallow the beads... (Besides as of february 2015 it is cheaper to buy this item from amazon compared to melissa-doug website which is other way round for most other melissa doug toys.)

We love Melissa & Doug products!

I got this set for my 5-year-old because he wanted to make his friends some bracelets and necklaces for Christmas. We love this set and you get a lot of beads for a very affordable price! The strings are also of excellent quality. We love Melissa & Doug products! Only one miniscule complaint is that I wish this came with a storage or at least a top lid for the tray it came with. Other than that, this is a great buy and highly recommend!

Very Pretty Beads....Nice Box....But no lead!!!

I bought this item as a Xmas gift for my 1/2 year old. She loved it. The first thing she wanted to do was make a necklace for one of her classmates. We found the beads to be large enough to easily thread. I was a little dissappointed with the thread. It looks like a very long shoelace which means you have to put many, many, many, many beads on it to make it look full and nice. Also, there are "anglets" at the end of the string which makes it difficult to knot. The string looks like a 4" or 6" shoelace. We could have knotted it better without the anglets. I think it is meant to be tied somehow. The box is very attractive but it does not come with a lid. Do not open if you do not have a large ziplock bag to put in. Or at least another box to put the beans into. I like making craft items and found this product very easy to use.

Beads without aggravation

The beads are just the right size for little hands, the box is great for storing the beads and string, and there is friction between the wood beads and the round-shoelace-type string so the beads stay on the string. This is a great toy. The box is less than an inch high so it is friendly to those of us with small homes. I bought this one for my nephew. When I told my kids, they protested because they mistakenly thought that I had given theirs away. Only problem: It is slightly tricky to get everything back in the box so that it closes. It is not too bad though. Overall - I highly recommend this toy. I plan to keep it for my grandkids when my kids are done with it.

Missing 2nd hole on some of the shapes

Over all I loved it for my 3 year daughter. However, I gave this a 4 out of 5 star rating because some of the shapes only had one hole instead of 2 holes and I couldn't use it on the strings.

It's pretty good

First off, my complaints: Just because it's a beading set it has a focus on "girly" colors and themes. My son likes hearts and pink just fine, but this is clearly made "for girls" and lacks in "boy" colors and themes entirely. My son loves letters and that is why I chose this set. Of course the other necklace beading sets I saw by M&D were even more gendered. There is no plastic cover to slide over the toy and much like every other similar M&D set lately I have to be super careful with storage or things will fall everywhere. How much can a sheet of clear plastic really cost? The quality of the laces is pretty poor. They are super rough and not pleasant to wear against the skin. Also, two of the cords are used to wrap up the others as you can see in the product pic, these two are permanently bent into a spiral shape that no amount of use is likely to work the out of. This is due to the very rough inflexible fabric used for the string. I'm looking for a good replacement. Positives include the fact that the holes in the beads are big enough for pipe cleaners (my son just loves putting beads on pipe cleaners), the fact that there are plenty of letters so you don't run out of common ones even if you make a few necklaces, the overall quality of the wooden beads is pretty good and uniform, and the price isn't too bad. It's hard to recommend the product, but it isn't terrible either. I tend to be very annoyed at the gender segregation of M&D toys in general, and this one hasn't helped their cause.

Good product

I bought these often in the past. They changed the packaging and I was disappointed. The tray used to have a clear plastic shield that went over the top and kept everything in place. Now, once you open the product, you have to find a way to keep the beads and pieces inside, like a ziplock bag. It is not a cheap product and I feel that the storage should be better thought out.

You’re better off getting a set with more beads and string

I bought this so my 4-year-old daughter could enjoy making jewelry and learn spelling at the same time. In one evening with me spelling their names she made a necklace for everyone in our family. She then gave the necklaces to her family members and then there wasn’t any more string left to make more. I wouldn’t recommend it because it isn’t great value for the amount of use you get. I won’t return it because she already made and gifted the necklaces but I have purchased fashion angels alphabet bead set and am hoping to get more use out of that set.

Great birthday gift

Awesome gift for my daughters 5th birthday. Heaps of each letter so plenty of spares, heaps of strings and other beads to go with your young ones creations. She's so wrapped with it already asking for more beads more strings!
