It's too large a square.

While well crafted and machined, it is a very large square. Overly so and would require a extraordinarily large sink in order to accommodate its size. Returning it.

Did they knowingly do this??

I ordered the stainless steel model. The upside down sticker in the photo correctly identifies what I ordered, but if you look closely you'll see it was placed over what the item actually is. The chrome model! Even through the plastic it's easy to see the chrome and yes, I took it out of the plastic to verify its mirror chrome finish. I am so tired of returning amazon items! Their quality control is non-existent. I'd rather pay a few dollars more and get the item I want rather than return another one at whole foods.

cannot open and close easily because the square part is huge and doesn't fit

This is definitely not a universal part. It appeared to fit the vessel sink I chose initially but when I had the plumber install it, once tightened into place you can push the drain part down to fill but then it gets stuck and won't release - I had to pay the plumber twice to install and then remove and now wait for another drain to have them install again.
